CIVIL WAR VET DIES SATURDAY

JAMES CUNNINGHAM PASSES AWAY AT ST. ANTHONYS HOME

James Cunningham, 81-year-old veteran of the Union forces of the Civil war, passed away at St. Anthony's Home Saturday morning at 2 o'clock, after a brief illness. The Funeral will be held Monday morning at 7:30 o'clock from St. Anthony's Home to Mount Olivet cemetery where burial will be made.
Mr. Cunningham was born in Table Mound township in 1842 and had spent practically his entire life in the county.
On April 6, 1862, he enlisted in the Union forces becoming a member of Co. "F", 21st Iowa volunteers, in which organization he served for three years under Col. Sam Murrill and Captain Leonard Hore. He saw active service, participating in the following engagements, Harris, Mo., Point-Gibson, Miss., Champion Huls, Black River, Vicksburg and also in engagements in Texas, Oklahoma and Alabama. At the close of the war he was honorably discharged at Clinton, Ia.
On February 8, 1882, he was united in marriage to Mary Hanley, who preceded him in death some years ago. He is survived by two brothers, Martin of Chicago, and Michael of Sioux City, and one sister, Mrs Thomas Cox of Dubuque.

He also served in southern Louisiana west of New Orleans on Bayou Teche, on the coast of Texas at Indianola and Matagorda Island, along White River in Arkansas, and Memphis, Tennessee.
His current roster listing: CUNNINGHAM, James Joseph. Age 21. Residence Milleray, nativity Iowa. Enlisted in Company F, 21st Iowa Volunteer Infantry, July 22, 1862. Mustered Aug. 22, 1862. Promoted Third Corporal June 5, 1865. Mustered out July 15, 1865, Baton Rouge, LA. Died June 2, 1923, St. Anthony's Home, Dubuque, IA, buried Mount Olivet Cemetery, Key West, IA.
