Christian Hanson, a local pioneer, who has seen this region develop from a wilderness, and in that development has taken his full share and part, died on April 17, 1935 at the home of his daughter Emma Jeffery.
Christian Hanson was born on May 25, 1846 on the Furua farm, near Gran, in the Hadeland region of Norway. His parents were Hans Ellingsen Furua and Kari Steffensdtr Tokerud, who were married on October 1, 1842 at Gran, Norway(per Gran parish records). On Jun 28, 1866 Christ married Olea Olsdtr at Gran. Christian left for America with his wife and two sons(Hans and Ole) on April 23, 1869. They first lived near Elstad Lutheran Church, in rural Fillmore County, MN.
In 1875 the family moved to Clinton township, Barron Co., WI where Christ homesteaded on 160 acres in Section 14. This was a beautiful tract of land, all wild, covered with heavy timber, and surrounding a pretty little lake. They made the trip here in a covered wagon, drawn by a pair of oxen. One cow was led, and part of the way the family walked. Upon reaching here, they continued to live in the wagon until he could get a little clearing made and a log cabin up. When the cabin was completed, they moved into it. This burned, and another was erected to replace it. This in turn was burned, and then a frame house was put up.
Mr. Hanson was a man of splendid physique and great strength. And all his great strength was needed to hew a home out of the dense forest which was his homestead - one of the most densely wooded tracts in this part of the world. By hard work, self sacrifice, and never ending toil, he built up a good farm. Here he continued general farming and dairying for 41 years. In 1916 he sold the place, and purchased 40 acres in Section 20, where he lived until the end of his life.
In his long residence here he has taken his part in everything that he has believed to be for the best good of the community. He has been chairman of the town board, thus giving good service both to the town and to the county. For many years he showed absolute fairness and good judgment as township assessor. One year he was town treasurer. He has also done most excellent work on the school board. He was a founding member of the Poskin Norwegian Lutheran Church, and an active supporter and liberal contributor.
Christ is survived by five children: Ole C. Hanson is in Spooner, Minnesota. Christopher Hanson is at Park Falls, Wisconsin. Carrie is the wife of William H. Rogers, of Nelson, Minnesota. Emma is the wife of William C. Jeffery, of Cumberland. Sophia is the wife of Elias Lamb, of Barron Township, Barron Co., Wisconsin. There are also 31 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren. Funeral services were held at the Poskin Lutheran Church and interment was in the church cemetery near his wife Olea, who died in 1919.
