The Carter's came from Virginia to KY by way of Tennessee
for some. Most of them were farmers. They were strong Christians and most were of the Baptist faith. Also most were Democrats.

Thomas Hugh Carter was born in Crittenden Co, KY and was the son of David Washington Carter Jr and Elizabeth [Lizzy] Davidson Carter.

Hugh as the family called him, was one of 8 children that lived to adulthood. The others were: Herbert Carter,Vernon Carter, Ina Carter Salyers, Lucy Carter Champion, Mary Carter Hinton, Cavit Carter, Clara Carter Floyd. There were 3 small children that died young.

Hugh married Rittie Maynard Carter and they were the parents of Geneva Carin Carter. Geneva became a Christian at an early age. She was a sweet, loving person. She died with Pulmonary Tuberculosis at age 15. She is buried in Pleasant Hill Cem in Crittenden Co., KY.

They also raised their niece, Marshall Green as their own after Ritties sister, Rosa Lee Maynard Green (1877 - 1917)died. Rosa had requested that Hugh and Rittie along with another sister [Ida Belle Maynard] raise Marshall as her father was also dead. So they did and loved her as their own.

After Geneva died they moved to Evansville, IN and Hugh found work there.
