Hazel Waunita (née Barackman) Miller was born April 2, 1908 to William Ellsworth & Anna Louise "Annie" (née Nicolai) Barackman at their home north of Curtis. She attended rural grade schools & then the Nebraska High School of Agriculture in Curtis. On June 15, 1930 she married Jay Edgar Miller at her parent's home. Hazel & Jay farmed in the Curtis area until moving to North Platte, NE in 1982, then to Kearney, NE in 1986. They wintered for 15 years at Apache Junction, AZ. Hazel was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Kearney & the Rebekah Lodge in Curtis. She was active at the Methodist church bowling league & the extension club while living in Curtis. Hazel is preceded in death by husband Jay Edgar Miller (1999); granddaughter, Alma Schmidt; 4 sisters; & 6 brothers. Hazel is survived by daughters, Donna (John) Schmidt of Kearney, NE, Maureta A. Studebaker of Mesa, AZ, & Joyce (Byron) Van Patten of Lincoln, NE; grandchildren, Jo (Kerry) Ludden, Jean Wilson, Linda (Mike) Erickson, Barbara A. (Frank) Studebaker-Denn, Suzanne R. (Taoufik) Soummane, Michael J. (Brenda) Studebaker, & Brian (Shelly) Farrar; great-grandchildren, Robert E. Denn, Elizabeth M. Denn, Gypsy Brodecky, Abbey Ludden, Chad Erickson, Katie Ludden, Brayden Farrar, Lindsay Erickson, & Calvin R. Studebaker; & great-great-granddaughter, Myka Brodecky. Funeral services were held Tuesday, October 16, 2001 at Horner-Lieske-Horner Mortuary in Kearney. Rev. Dr. Ron Roemmich officiated. Graveside services were Tuesday at 1 PM at the Curtis Cemetery with Rev. Shirley Carpenter officiating. Memorials preferred to the Kearney Senior Citizens Center.
