James H Abel, of Co. F, enrolled Sep. 23, 1861 in Waterloo by Capt. Merrill as a 3rd Sergeant; mustered in Nov. 22, 1861 in Ft. Wayne by Lt. Stansbury at age 31. He was 5' 10.50" tall, light complexion, black eyes, and dark hair. Born Feb. 9, 1829 in Trumbull Co., OH, employed as a farmer, married to Abigail Robe, resident of Newville, in DeKalb Co., IN. Discharged for general debility and typhoid fever Sep. 3, 1862 in Indianapolis, IN with rank of Sergeant. Notes: Actual age was 32. Brother to Henry J. Came to DeKalb Co. 1836. Promoted Orderly Sergeant Oct. 3, 1862. In Field and Marine Hospital Apr. 1862, with typhoid fever, furloughed for 60 days. Sent to St. Louis Hospital on steamer Empress Jun. 6, 1862. Probably served in Co. C, 35th IN Oct. 6, 1864 to Sep. 30, 1865 as a drafted man from Valparaiso; he filed Invalid Pension Application to receive Pension Certificate #270952 Mar. 7, 1883, in IN (indexed as Abee). Resident of Spencerville 1879-1882; of St. Joe 1885-1907 where he died May 15, 1907; buried in Riverside (St. Joe) Cemetery.
