Local Woman's Husband Killed
The News and Observer, October 29, 1959

A Navy jet pilot from Marshallberg and husband of a Raleigh native has been killed in a plane crash near San Diego, Calif., it was reported last night.

He was listed as Lt. Lester N. Hill, 34, a 1948 graduate of the University of North Carolina and veteran of both World War II and the Korean War.

He was married to the former Mary Ellen Wellons, daughter of T. T. Wellons of 206 Chamberlain St. and former advertising manager of Hudson-Belk.

A member of his wife's family said Lt. Hill's jet apparently exploded after the takeoff on a training flight. The plane crashed in the ocean. Divers are scheduled to begin checking the area Thursday for the wreckage.

A helmet found floating on the ocean was identified as that of Hill.

The Navy said the condition of the helmet indicated Hill did not survive the crash of his F8J Crusader.

His helmet was found Tuesday about a mile off of La Jolla, Calif. The plane apparently crashed into the ocean shortly after taking off from Miramar Naval Air Station at 7:35 a.m. Monday.

Lt. Hill was expecting to be promoted to lieutenant commander in the near future.

Besides his wife, he is survived by a son, Steve Wellons Hill; his mother, Mrs. Myrtle Hill of Marshallberg in Carteret County and one sister, Mrs. Charles Conway of Marshallberg.

His father, who died several years ago, was a retired officer.
