Born in Mississippi on September 12, 1869 according to the death certificate (which is probably incorrect as to the DOB), which also stated he was the son of Price Parris Coffin (who was born in SC) and Mary Posey, according to his son the informant, William Oscar Coffin. In truth George's mother was Frances Rhudy (b in VA) who was Price's earlier wife. George was a blacksmith. Before he is found in Floyd county GA the last twenty years of his life, he lived in Mississippi and Alabama.

George was survived by his wife Frances "Fannie" Carr and at least five children.
