Second Asst. Fire Chief Leonard R. Vead, 58, of the Alexandria Fire Department died at 4:40 a.m. today in an Alexandria hospital.

A 39-year veteran in the department, he had been active until four months ago, when he became ill.

He joined the department on July 1, 1923, according to Fire Chief Pearly Bonnette. He was promoted to second assitant chief on Dec. 1, 1958.

Bonnette said Vead distinguished himself as a fire fighter. His record contains a long list of minor injuries sustained while fighting fires.

Vead joined the "hero-rank" in the department several years ago, Bonnette said, by entering a burning building to rescue a young boy. Bonnette did not have a record of the incident but the fire was in the building complex housing the Hokus Pokus liquor store.

Vead was a native of Tioga. He is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Omalee Hijuelos of Long Beach, Miss., and Mrs. Margaret Eldness of New Orleans. Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. Friday in Our Lady of Prompt Succor Catholic church.

A rosary will be recited at 8 p.m. today at Hixson Bros. Funeral home.
