John E. Bushong age 82 of Galesburg, Illinois passed away Thursday, October 11, 2012 at 12:40 AM at Rosewood Care Center in Galesburg, Illinois.

John was born the son of Arvid C. and Leona A. (Stronquist) Bushong on April 12, 1930 in Galesburg, Illinois. He married Roberta L. "Bertie" Hatch on September 17, 1950 in Knoxville, Illinois. She preceded him in death on January 7, 2006. He later remarried.

Surviving are his three daughters: Mindy (Roger) Thurman of Abingdon, Illinois, Jolene (Doug) Albright of Knoxville, Illinois, Amy (Gary) Walker of Gilson, Illinois, two sons: Lindsay (Kelly) Bushong of Pekin, Illinois and Brian (Annette) Bushong of Germany. He is also survived by his 16 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and one sister Cardyn McLaren of Knoxville, Illinois.

John was preceded in death by his parents, wife and one sister, Jane Peterson.

John was very proud of his military background he served in the United States Army during the Korean War Conflict. He received many medals including the Good Conduct Medal, Korean Service Medal and the UN Service Medal. John was also a lifelong member of the American Legion

John truly loved watching his grandkids play school sports and he attended as many events as possible. He coached little league baseball in Abingdon for many years and he was an avid Chicago Bears and Chicago Bulls fan. In his spare time he enjoyed collecting baseball memorabilia.

A graveside service will be held on Monday, October 15, 2012 at 11:00 AM at the Knoxville Cemetery in Knoxville, Illinois. Rev. Judy Doyle will be officiating.
