Son of Grant Stanbery and Cazzie Cook.

Thomas' mother died when he was only four months old. His grandparents, Tom and Nancy Younce Stanbery, raised him until he was grown. As he was growing up, he became known as "Little Tom".

"Little Tom" attended Mt. Gilead Baptist Church with his grandparents (and later his father, Grant) and there decided to become a minister. He pastored several churches in the area, including Mt. Gilead Baptist Church 1941 thru 1943, then decided to further his education (after marrying and having three children). He attended and graduated from Carson Newman College in TN, continued to pastor churches in the area, one of which was Big Springs Baptist Church, Carter Co. TN. Then he moved his wife and by then six children to Louisville, KY where he attended and graduated from Southeastern Theo. Siminary.

His wife, Ruth, became an interior decorator for Sears in Louisville, and Tom eventually gave up the ministry for counseling in Social Services.

Tom and Ruth were living in Jefferson City, TN in 1949 at the death of his father. Tom was attending Carson Newman College.
