According to the 1860 Federal Census, Rufus Fielding Standard was born about 1856 in Mississippi, the son of William Standard and Sarah Smith. He may have had as many as 12 siblings. William Standard may have been married before his marriage to Sarah, as it appears that Sarah is too young to be the mother of the older children.

The 1860 Federal Census lists the following family members for William and Sarah Standard:
Spencer age 24
Mary J. age 22
Sarah A. age 20
Julian (also named Indian in 1850 and Indiana in 1880) age 18
Bazil age 13
Byron (also named William B. in 1850 and William Byra in 1880) age 11
Avery A.(also named Mary elsewhere) age 9
Isaiah age 6
Louisa J. age 5
Rufus age 4
Lenora (also named Frances L. in 1880) age 3
Samuel age 2
Babe age 1

Rufus married Emily Lyols sometime prior to 1880. Their first child was born in 1880. That child was not listed in the 1880 census. The census ended May 31, 1880; any children born after June 1, 1880 were omitted. At the time of that census Rufus and Emily were living in Attala County. Rufus and Emily had as many as 8 childen. The best information available seems to indicate that those children were:

John Standard born in June 1880
William Newton "Newt" Standard born in 1862, died in 1975
Walter Columbus Standard born in 1883
Albert Standard (No information is available on him)
Effie Ada Standard born in 1886
Eddie Oscar Standard born in 1887, died in 1950
Dezinita Lula Stanard born in 1888,died in 1938
Minnie Lee Standard born in 1890, died in 1936

Rufus' wife Emily may have died about 1890. Their youngest child Minnie was born about 1890. It is possible that Emily died in childbirth.

According to the 1900 census Rufus and his second wife Mary Townsend married about 1890. At that time they were living in Carroll County. Rufus and Mary also had as many as 8 children.

Thomas Eldridge Standard born in 1893, died in 1981
William Clifton Standard born in 1895, died in 1975
Kenneth Gaston Standard born in 1895, died in 1900
(Cliff and Kenneth were twins)
Jennie Mae Standard born in 1897, died in 1983
Jessie Ethelia Standard born in 1899, died in 1987
Richard Clyde Standard born in 1900, died in 1982
William Delmar Standard born in 1902, died in 1972
Linnie Perl Standard may have died at birth

In 1910 Rufus and Mary were still in Carroll County with 9 children. It is uncertain when or where Mary died, but by 1920 Rufus was a widower living in Sunflower County with children Todd (who was actually Edd), Minnie, Clifton, Jennie Mae, Jessie and Delmar. In 1930 Rufus was still in Sunflower County with daughter Minnie and granddaughter Susie, who was actually Jessie Pearl.
