A 71 year-old rural Oostburg man was killed Friday afternoon when he was crushed by a large elm tree which rolled on him after it had been cut down.

Abraham Hoftiezer of R.1, Oostburg, working for the Town of Holland along with a Sheboygan County Highway Department crew, had just cut down the tree along a town road, two miles southwest of Oostburg.

Hoftiezer was beginning to trim the branches from the felled tree with a power saw when the trunk rolled and pinned him to the ground.

Other members of the crew managed to free him and he was taken to Sheboygan Memorial Hospital by the Sertich ambulance.

He was pronounced died on arrival at the hospital shortly after 3 p.m.

Dr. Reed M. Simpson, county corner, attributed the death to a crushed chest.

Mr. Hoftiezer was born Feb. 8, 1898 in Ozaukee County, a son of the late Garret and Hattie Huenink Hoftiezer. On March 6, 1919, he married the former Clara Wieberdink at the home of her parents in the Town of Holland.
.
The couple farmed on her homestead farm their entire married lives.

Although he was retired from farming, Mr. Hoftiezer was a town supervisor for the Town of Holland the past four years.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Mrs. Eugene (LaVerne) Lemmenes of Madison and Mrs. Ivan (Annette) Molter of Cedar Grove; two sons, Wallace of Peoria, Ill., and Dale of Wadsworth, Ill.; 14 grandchildren, and three sisters, Mrs. Bertha Wilterdink, Mrs. Coba Onnink and Mrs. Minnie Vergowe, all of Gibbsville.

One son preceded him in death.

Funeral services will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at the Calvary Orthodox Presbyterian Church, Cedar Grove, the Rev. Henry Fikkert, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the Presbyterian Cemetery.

A 1:45 p.m. family service will be held in the fellowship hall of the church.

Friends may call at the Krostag Funeral Home, Oostburg, from 4 p.m. Sunday until 10:30 a.m. Monday and at the church from noon until the hour of services.

The family has established a memorial fund in Mr. Hoftiezer’s name.
