James A. McGarrity, 93, a former state legislator, died yesterday at Riddle Memorial Hospital in Media. Long a resident of West Philadelphia, he had lived in Broomall since 1975. A lifelong Republican and a dedicated worker on behalf of the GOP, Mr. McGarrity was elected to the state House of Representatives in 1939, representing the 22d Legislative District. He was the Republican nominee in 1950 for another term in the General Assembly. Mr. McGarrity was chief crew dispatcher for the Pennsylvania Railroad, and he retired in 1959 after 51 years of service. He had started working for the railroad when he was 16. Pursuing his interest in politics, he became a Republican committeeman in the 46th Ward in 1928 and held the post until 1958. He gave it up only because he moved out of the ward. He ran for and won a committee post in the 55th Ward in 1958, and he served as a GOP committeeman in the 55th until 1974, when he was 82. Mr. McGarrity was a member of the Railroad Holy Name Society and of St. Pius Church. He is survived by his son, John J.; daughters, Kathryn McCann, Helen Knell and Marie McGough; 12 grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. Friends may call after 7 p.m. Monday at the Donohue Funeral Home, 8401 West Chester Pike, Upper Darby. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Pius X Church, Lawrence Road, Broomall. Burial will be in SS. Peter & Paul Cemetery.
