Margaret Irwin was born in New York City of Irish parents. She and Michael Burke met and married sometime prior to 1900. Their life together consisted of one tragedy following another. They lost three children, the last being a beautiful daughter who died of scarlet fever before reaching her eighth birthday. Mike's business partner absconded with the company money, and left Mike "holding the bag".
Sometime prior to 1920, Margaret & Mike came to St. Joseph, MO, where Mike had other family members. In later years, he worked as a night watchman, and suffered a crippling injury while attempting to prevent a burglary.
In spite of such problems in life, Margaret was always in great humor, and a wonderfully pleasant person with whom to associate.
