Herman J. Schmeling, 85, passed away July 8, 2003. Survived by his wife of 57 years, Marie; sons, Delbert, of the family home, and Karl (Sharon) Schmeling, Lakewood, Colo.; daughter, Janis Griego, Boulder; four grandchildren, Bree and Nicole Schmeling, Denver, Shane Higbee and Amber Law, both of Boulder; nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Carl and Albert; and sisters, Irene, Marie, Margaret and Ernestine. Born to Albert and Margaretha Schmeling on March 9, 1918, in Atchison, Kan. Herman served in the Navy from 1943 to 1946 in the China, Burma and India areas. He married Marie Giles on March 16, 1946, in Leavenworth, Kan. They moved to Pueblo in July of 1946. Herman was employed at the Pueblo Army Depot, moved to work at Fort Bliss, Texas, from 1960 to 1964, and moved back to work at the Pueblo Army Depot until his retirement in 1971. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. Cremation, Montgomery & Steward Crematorium. Memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church, 715 W. Evans, Pueblo, with the Rev. Randy Bolt officiating. Private family interment. Those who desire may make memorial contributions in Herman's name to either Trinity Lutheran Church or School through the funeral home.
