Scott H. Belden, 58, of Waverly, Iowa, died Thursday morning, February 28, 2008 at St. Mary's Hospital, Rochester, Minnesota, from complications of Thyroid cancer.
He was born on September 12, 1949 in Spirit Lake, Iowa, the son of Howard W. and Laverne B. (Kaiser) Belden. He attended school in Spirit Lake and graduated from the Spirit Lake High School in 1967. Scott then attended the University of Northern Iowa where he received his BA Degree in Business Management in 1971. In the late 1960's, he married Nancy Bleakley and to this union two daughters were born, Jenny & Tami. The couple was later divorced. Scott continued to live and work in Cedar Falls, and on December 16, 1976 he was united in marriage to Myrna (Lockard) Boeckmann in Humboldt, Iowa. The couple lived in Humboldt for the next year before moving back to Waverly to be closer to family. Over the next years, Scott worked for several insurance companies as a professional representative. During this time, he and Myrna also partnered as owner/managers of income properties in the Waverly area. In the mid 1990's, Scott retired from the insurance business and went to work in the offices of IBP in Waterloo for a change of pace. In 2002, Scott left IBP to concentrate his entire effort on their income properties, growing the business to 72 properties. In July of 2006, he was diagnosed with Stage 4 Thyroid cancer, but was able to maintain his quality of life with the help of Myrna, family and friends.
Scott loved music, and sang in the Varsity Men's Glee Club at UNI. He also sang in the Metropolitan Chorale in Waterloo for two years, and was a charter member of the Les Hale Chorale in Cedar Falls, continuing to sing with the group until their final performance in December of 2005. He spent many happy times scuba diving, traveling, motorcycling and caring for his properties.
He is survived by his wife, Myrna of Waverly; four daughters, Jenny & Tami from his first marriage, Kellie Boeckmann and her fiancé, Eric Blakesley of Waterloo, Jennifer and Michael Way of West Des Moines, Iowa; his father, Howard Belden of Spirit Lake; one sister, Sheryl and David Bewyer of Cedar Falls; one brother, Craig and Melanie Belden of West Des Moines, Iowa; three nephews and their families and two nieces and their families. His mother, Laverne, preceded him in death.
Scott's body was cremated, and there will be an Informal Gathering to Honor Scott from 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm on Tuesday, March 4, 2008. Memorials may be directed to the Cedar Valley Hospice-Waverly.
