Laverne taught school at Mt. Auburn and Maynard before moving to Spirit Lake in 1940 to teach. She taught in the Milford Community Schools for 23 years, retiring in 1981.
On June 15, 1941, she was united in marriage to Howard Belden at Monona. They made their home in Spirit Lake.
She was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church where she taught Sunday School and was active in the choir and various Bible studies. She was also a member of the American Association of University Women, the Sweet Adelines, enjoyed bridge, and was a Girl Scout leader. At the Dickinson County Memorial Hospital, she volunteered as a Pink lady and assisted with Telecare and Meals on Wheels.
Laverne passed away on December 14 after suffering a stroke on September 12.
Survivors are her husband, Howard;, Sheryl Bewyer and her husband, David, of Cedar Falls; sons, Craig and his wife Melanie of West Des Moines, and Scott and his wife, Myrna, of Waverly; grandchildren: Aimee Bewyer Thode, Aaron Bewyer, Alissa Bewyer, Brian Belden, Mark Belden, Jennifer Belden, and Tami Belden; sisters, Elmira Cordes of Monona and Gladys Loveland of Decorah.
