William Witherspoon (1758-1841), Emigrant, came to America in 1790 or 1791 with his wife, Mary, and two children John and Elizabeth. At least one brother, Samuel, came with him. They were a part of that great emigration of Scotch-Irish who came to America following the Revolution. They were Seceder Presbyterians, and apparently all came from the Scotch clan of Witherspoons. Some Witherspoon families went to northern Ireland as early as 1712 and it is believed that this branch of the Witherspoon families came from Ireland since John Witherspoon gives his place of birth as Ireland on census records. John's daughter, Drusilla, stated many times that her father was five years old when he came to America.
This family must have gone on rather soon to Western Pennsylvania, the frontier of pioneer settlement in the early 1790s, because we find both Samuel and William Witherspoon on the Tax List of 1793 in Chartiers Township, Washington County, Pennsylvania at Cannonsburg. There Samuel married Nancy Agness Dobbins, whose family came to America at the same time as the Witherspoon family.
It is not known just when William went from there to Beaver County, but in 1809 we find a deed recording purchase of land on Big Travis Creek, Hanover Township, Beaver County.
In these early years, Beaver County was still a wilderness in which these hardy pioneer settlers were often threatened with Indian raids, a constant source of danger until after the War of 1812. Most of this area is now a part of Raccoon State Park, where an effort is being made to preserve its natural wooded beauty and wildlife.
Samuel Witherspoon, brother of William, was a tailor by trade and continued to live at Canonsburg until his untimely death in 1805, leaving his wife and seven small children. She, too, went up into the woods of Beaver County, probably to live near some of her relatives since we find Dobbins families living near her. She lived for several years in Big Beaver Township, and then moved to Little Beaver Township settling near Enon Valley with her only son, John Witherspoon. About this same time (1822) William Witherspoon moved to that vicinity.
William deeded his land at Frankfort Springs to his eldest son, John, in 1822. Mary Witherspoon, wife of William, died at Enon Valley, October 23, 1832, and it is believed that both she and William are buried in the Bethel Church Cemetery five miles north of Enon Valley. Mary's death is recorded in the Bible of her daughter, Elizabeth Allison.
During his later years, William made his home with his daughter, Jane Dungan, wife of Thomas Dungan, whose family were very early settlers at Frankfort Springs.
