Joe told that he had lived in Texas and gravitated through Hatfield, Arkansas in 1900, where he met and married little red-haired Mary Q. Reid, September 30,1900. Very little is known of Joe's life before he met and married Mary.

Joe also told that he had driven a freight wagon on the Sante Fe Trail between St. Louis, Missouri and Sante Fe, New Mexico sometime in the late 1800's. He also told that he had owned land in the Davis mountains in West Texas which he said he sold for twenty-five cents an acre. He was on his way back to Tennessee to visit his relatives. He started out from West Texas to Tennessee by horseback.

He arrived in Hatfield, Arkansas sometime in the Spring or Summer of 1900. It had been raining and was very muddy, so he stopped to rest his horse for a couple of weeks. While in Hatfield he met Mary Q. Reid and after a short courtship they were married. He was forty-five years old, she was twenty. They homesteaded about two miles south of Vandervoort, Arkansas. Their homestead was beside a large spring which is now part of the Cassatot State Park and is known as Gentry Springs. The front stoop of their home was a rock. The rock is still there and the springs are still running.

Joe died in the State Hospital for Nervous Diseases in Little Rock, Arkansas. The cause of death was listed as Myocarditis and Pellegra on his death certificate.
