John graduated from Zearing High School and attended Central Iowa Business College in Marshalltown. He retired from the Fidelity Savings Bank as Vice President in May 1970 after 43 years of service.
He served 30 yea on the Board of he Christian Church and has been both school and city treasurer. He was also treasurer of the Marshalltown Kiwanis Cl. He was an avid fisherman and outdoorsman and active in the Marshall County Wildlife Club, the Isaac Walton League and the Boy Scouts of America.
He was married to Golda S Achtemeier.
