Lois Bartine Shives, 92, of Marshalltown, formerly of Clemons, died early Wednesday, July 9, 2008, at the Iowa Veteran's Home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 12, 2008 at Clemons UCC with Reverend David Lewis officiating. Burial will be in the Clemons Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home from 5:00-7:00 p.m. on Friday. Memorials may be directed to Clemons UCC or Red Cross.

Born Lois Ruth Bartine on October 3, 1915, in St. Anthony, IA, she was the daughter of C.R. and Roxy (Mooney) Bartine. She graduated from Clemons High School in 1933 and went on to receive her teaching certificate in Elementary Education at UNI. Lois married Woody Shives on June 8, 1940 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. After their marriage, Lois moved to Clemons to teach school while Woody served in the Southwest Pacific in the US Army. He returned in 1945. The couple lived in Clemons for 45 years. Later they moved to Marshalltown, living at the Embers for 2-1/2 years, and then just recently moving to the IVH.

Lois taught school at the Eldora Training School, Clemons, Special Education at Melbourne and State Center schools, and 5th grade at West Marshall. She was a member of the Red Cross Board, State Center Manor Board, Deaconess at Clemons UCC, President of Women's Fellowship at Clemons UCC, and an associate member of First Congregational Church of Marshalltown. Lois loved to cook and she liked flowers.

Left to cherish her memory are her husband of 68 years, Woody; her two children, Stephen Shives of Clive, IA and Melissa (David) Beall of Vancouver, WA; 3 grandchildren and 2 step-grandchildren; her brother, Cyrus Bartine of Cedar Falls; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In death, she has rejoined her parents, one sister, and four brothers.
