Mr. Homan died in Germany, leaving a wife and four children, Sophia, Maria, Frank and Andreas. His widow Dorothea remarried to his best friend, John Seiler, and the family emigrated to Ohio in 1881. Most of the children who emigrated took the Seiler surname.

There is varying evidence regarding the surname spelling, both "Harmon" and "Hammon" have been cited in marriage records of Sophia's children. The "Homan" version comes from an autobiography by my mother and his grand-daughter Lena (Seiler) Grubb.
