Third of seven children of Jason and Lois Graves Ashley, natives of Windsor Co. Vermont, Laurin traveled with them in 1839 on a 47-day covered wagon trip to Illinois. First they stayed in Putnam Co. for a year but then moved to LaSalle Co. near Tonica, where Jason Ashley purchased a farm.

Laurin married Polly Densmore on July 12, 1843. They had eight children born in the La Salle County area. In 1884 he moved to Sullivant township of Ford Co. where he farmed.

He established a stock farm raising shorthorn cattle, sheep and horses. At one time he owned 1,375 acres of land on sections 17, 18 and 9 of Sullivant Township.
