Jonathan Johnson Brewster must have had a traumatic yet interesting childhood. Johnson was born to Ozem Brewster, Sr. during the Revolutionary War years 1776-1783. Current research seems to indicate Jonathan Johnson Brewster was born 4 Mar 1779 in Connecticut to Ozem Brewster's first wife Martha Spicer. Martha probably stayed in Connecticut with her parents while Ozem joined the Vermont soldiers who invaded Canada (p. 302 Rolls of Vermont Soldiers in the Revolutionary War serving under Capt. Oliver Potter and Col. Seth Warner). In November 1779, Martha Spicer Brewster died in Groton, Connecticut leaving 9-year-old Stephen to be raised by her parents Oliver (#6477022) and Alethea (#6477014) Spicer. Ozem needed to remarry quickly as baby Johnson was only 8mos old. Thus, probably in early 1780, Ozem married Huldah Chandler (1759-1808). The family lived in Vermont and soon Johnson was big brother to Mary Polly, Ozem, Jr, and many other siblings. In 1802, Jonathan decided to leave Richmond, Chittenden Co., Vermont and move to Chandlersville, Muskingum Co., OH, the town founded by his step-mother Keziah's brother Capt. John Chandler (1757-1829). On 19 Nov 1812, Jonathan married Catherine Reise (born 8 Oct 1791 in Loudon Co., VA). Children born to Catherine and Jonathan were: Stephen (born 3 Nov 1813), Susan (born Nov 1819), Mary (born before 1820), John W (born 26 Nov 1822), Nancy (born 1826), Ozem (born 30 Jan 1828), and William (born 1833). Jonathan filed his will on 21 Sept 1855 in Zanesville, Muskingum Co., OH. He died on 8 May 1864 at the age of 84 years, 2 months, and 4 days and was buried in the Salt Creek Cemetery, Smith Mill, Muskingum Co., OH (Find a Grave #9797759) Catherine Reise Brewster died on 3 Feb 1873 in West Lebanon, Salt Creek, Muskingum Co., OH at the age of 79 years, 3 months, and 23 days. She also is buried in the Salt Creek Cemetery, Muskingum Co., OH (#9797755).
