Vernon was born on July 19, 1926 at Vienna, SD to Alvin and Clema (Kovor) Rasmussen. He attended school in Vienna, SD. Following graduation, he entered the U.S. Army in January of 1945 and was discharged in August of 1946. Following his discharge, he drove Standard Oil Truck for Mike Stevens. He also farmed with his father and continued farming until he had a stroke in August of 1999. He entered the Assisted Living in Bryant, SD and then lived at Bryant Parkview Center until his death.

Vernon was a lifetime member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church and served on the church board. He was a member of the Vienna Legion for over sixty years. He took much pride in that honor. Vernon enjoyed having coffee with his friends. He also enjoyed and loved his nieces, nephews and their children; especially enjoying their visits.

Vernon is survived by one brother, Gene and his wife, Carol Rasmussen, of Bryant, SD; one sister, Sharon and her husband, Bill Herman, of Watertown, SD; one sister-in-law, Shirley Rasmussen of Watertown; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Dale.
