William A. Tweeddale, Biographical Sketch, about 1935

"WILLIAM A. TWEEDDALE
One of the three men who laid the foundation of the City of Algoma was Edward Tweeddale. He was born in England, May 8, 1819, and when an infant, migrated with his parents to St. John, N.B. [New Brunswick]. At 15 he went to sea and continued sailing until 1850 when he located at Manitowoc. Here he married Mary A. Clater, a Virginian, and with her and two other families, on May 27, 1851, located at the mouth of the Ahnapee river - being the first white settlers - and after building log cabins for homes, engaged in fishing.
The first baby born to the Tweeddale family September 10, 1851, was also the first white native of Algoma - William A. Tweeddale. In childhood he played with Indian children, grew up with the community, and engaged in sailing and fishing.
October 28, 1879, William (Billy) Tweeddale was married to Mary Madden of the town of Pierce, born January 31, 1852. They traveled by oxcart to Whitefish Bay, Door County, where they moved to Sturgeon Bay, where for many years Mr. Tweeddale was tender on the toll bridges.
William A. Tweeddale died December 15, 1930. Mrs. Tweeddale still lives in Sturgeon Bay, where she is still in fair health and mentally alert at the age of 83.
William and Mary Tweeddale were the parents of six children: Henry Tweeddale of Sturgeon Bay; Elizabeth, who married M. Cunningham (both deceased) is survived by two daughters - (Grace, who in July 1924, married Frank Huller [Hutter] of Algoma has one child, Mary Ellin, born July 11, 1929, and Marie, married Leo Lessions, has four children - Janet, Richard, James, and Darrel; Mary, who married John Maples (deceased) has two sons - John and James; Thomas, who married Dorothy Tagge, lives in Milwaukee; Walter, who married Evelyn Writt, has two children - Kenneth and Ruth; Frank, who died in 1930.
John Maples married Ceclia Kazak and they have two children - Robert and Anita."
