William L. (Bill) Draper, Scoutmaster to a generation of Rocky Mount boys, died unexpectedly at his home late last night [21 May] of a coronary at 11:30 at 1333 Hill Street. Draper had just turned 50 his birthday being on May 13.
Funeral services have been scheduled for 11 o’clock Thursday morning at the Church of the Good Shepherd with the Rev. Thomas J. C. Smyth, rector, in charge. Burial will be in Pineview Cemetery.
Draper was a native of Troy, New York, son of the late Edward Elliott Draper and Jessamine Kimball Draper. He came to Rocky Mount in 1932 when his father established a cordage plant here. He had served as president of the company after his father’s death. For the past two and one-half years he had been a representative of the N. C. State Motor Club, serving Edgecombe County.
He had graduated from Lansingburgh High School in Troy, N. Y. and then graduated from Union College at Schenectady, N. Y. He served four years in the U.S. Army in World War II.
In Rocky Mount, Draper had not only served as Scoutmaster of the Episcopal Church’s Troop 11 since 1932, but also hd been active in the church, having served as a vestry, Sunday School teacher and president of the Men’s Club. He also was a member of the Mayor’s Good Neighbor Committee.
Surviving, in addition to his wife, the former Mildred Thorp of Rocky Mount, are one son, Richard T. (Rick) Draper, high school student here; and two brothers Edson V. S. Draper Rocky Mount banker, and Richard E. Draper Sea Cliff, N. Y.
