Moved from Illinois to Mahaska Co, Iowa in late 1850s. Moved to Kansas in 1878. Farmer, then owned a mercantile store, then became the city attorney, police judge, and moved to Beloit, Kansas where he was elected probate judge for the county. He also served as City Treasurer for a while. Supposedly descended from Ethan Allen, but not proved.

Joseph S Allen, 84, a retired merchant, died of senility at the family apartment,119 1/2 South Santa Fe Ave at 2 o'clock this morning. He was a native of Illinois and came to this city only last September from Missouri. Several children survive. They are Mrs Elosia Philbrick, Salina, Ethan Allen, Salina, Mrs Kitty Hickman, Salina, Mrs J H Dennis, Seattle, Washington and Gordon Allen, Oklahoma.

Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at four o'clock at the Ryan Funeral Home North Eighth street with Rev M Lee Sorey, pastor of the First Christian Church, in charge. Interment in Gypsum Hill Cemetery.
