Melbourne "Mel" W. Kastendieck of 808 College Ave., died Monday at St. Thomas More Hospital. He was born Sept. 25, 1909 in Westcliffe and was 70. Mr. Kastendieck was raised in the Wet Mountain Valley and had lived in the are all of his life. While residing there, he was Custer County Assessor for four years. He moved to Canon City in 1949 where he worked at the Colorado State Penitentiary as Industrial Foreman until his health forced his retirement. Mr. Kastendieck had been in ill health for the past 5-1/2 years. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Army and was a member of the VFW. A member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Mr. Kastendieck had been active in the church all his life and had held many church offices. On Nov. 15, 1931 he married Ethel Hunt in Westcliffe. She survives, as do two daughters, Mrs. Virginia Luoma of Leadville; and Mrs. Ruth Joyce Lintner of Walla Walla, Wash. Also surviving are six grandchildren, one great-grandchild; and a brother, August Kastendieck of Grand Junction. Funeral services will be at 10:30 am Friday at the St. Paul Lutheran Church with Rev. Stephen Grumm officiating. Burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery. Those wishing may contribute to the St. Paul Lutheran Church Memorial Fune. Wilson Almont Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
