John Abner Hardy, a Sherman farmer who operated a dairy, was steward of the Austin College dining hall during the 1910s, '20s, and '30s. Described in the 1912 Chromascope as the man "who superintends the satisfying of our inner man," Hardy sold the College milk, butter, eggs, and produce. During the Depression, some alumni observed, the milk and produce from Hardy's farm were just about the only things served in the dining hall, much of it given out of Hardy's generosity.

John Abner and Lucy also had the following other children:
1) Alva Cooper Hardy born about 1895 in Logan County, Kentucky. 2) Jewell Luckett Hardy born Sept 1902 in Sherman and died in 1975 in Dallas.
