Jack and his siblings lost their father, Elija Garner, in the Civil War in 1862, and were raised afterwards by their mother and grandparents, later their stepfather, William Henry Anders after 1865.

Jack married Martha Goodwin on Dec 12, 1878 in Jefferson County, AL. His younger brother John Elija also married another Martha Goodwin a decade later in Jefferson County, exactly how related to Jack's wife still undetermined but likely cousins.

Jack and Martha had a total of six offspring:

- Nettie Rosel “Rose” Garner Bailey 1879-1966
- John Alexander Garner 1881-1959
- James Jackson Garner 1886-1967
- Elias Pinckney “Pink” Garner 1891-1973
- Martha Mae Garner Parker 1894-1965
- Lela Ethel Garner Tanner 1901-1987

Jack remained a farmer all his life, eventually moving to Morgan County, AL by 1910, and remaining there until his death. He is buried in Evergreen Cemetery with his wife, and very near the graves of his mother and stepfather.
