Elmer graduated from Bradley University, Peoria, in 1929. He was laid off from Western Electric of Chicago after the stock market crash and went to South Dakota to work on the Franks Estate farm near Alexandria.
After seven years of crop failures, dust storms, hail and grasshoppers, he returned to Illinois and shortly sent for his wife and two small children.
He found work in is field as a tool designer in 1950 and the family moved from Bloomington to Loves Park, IL. Elmer retired in 1972 as a mechanical engineer for Atwood Industries..
