Lyman was born to New York native Darius Carr and Canadian born mother, Thankful, on 20 April 1843. Parental and exact birth per document "Carr Family Annual March March 1949".

Lyman married 16 year old Achsah E Green 15 December 1970 in Jackson County, MO. Achsah's father was deceased however her mother was present at the ceremony.

By 1875, he was married to Achsah who was born in Iowa and the couple was settled in Hutchinson. The couple's children included

Lyman served in the Civil War a private with Co H 3rd WISC INF. He was a member of the F.M. Harrington Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) Post 41 in Hutchinson.

Lyman's wife, Achsah lived out her life and died 15 December 1918 in Perkins County, South Dakota.
