son/o Jubal Anderson & Mary B. Cheatham Early.

He died at his son's residence in Lexington MO.

Father of Lt. Gen. Jubal Anderson Early - CSA.

-------------------------

Lexington Intelligencer, May 10, 1902

Died, on the first of May, at the residence of his son, Robt. H. Early, in Lafayette county, Mo., near Lexington, Col. Joab Early, the father of Major General Jubal E. Early. Col. Early was born in Franklin county, Virginia, where he grew up and married the daughter of Col. Samuel Hairston. He was highly respected as a citizen and filled many of the offices of that county with honor and dignity. He subsequently purchased a farm in the valleys of the Great Kanawha, West Virginia, where he reared a large family--some of whom still reside in their native state, while others have emigrated to other states, all filling positions of respectability in the counties in which they live.

Col. Early, while yet in the prime of life, was elected colonel in the Virginia militia, a position many a noble Virginian was proud of, and which he held up to the time of the confederate war. When that war broke out he, with his highly distinguished son, Gen. Jubal Early, took sides with the fortunes of the land of his birth, and with a noble sacrifice, had to suffer the loss of his fine estate on the Kanawha and come a refugee to Missouri, where he resided till the day of his death. The result of the war and the subsequent oppression and disgrace to which Virginia was subjected so crushed the proud spirit of the patriotic old man that he ceased to take an interest any longer in public affairs, and he retired to private life to spend the remainder of his days in the family of his son, Robert. He died surrounded by his children and grandchildren.

Col. Early, while yet in the prime of life, was elected a Colonel in the Virginia militia, a position many a noble Virginian was proud of, and which he held up to the time of the confederate war.

When that war broke out Col. Early, with his highly distinguished son, Gen. J.E. Early, took sides with the fortunes of the land of his birth, and with a noble sacrifice, had to suffer the loss of his fine estate on the Kanawha, and come a refugee to Missouri, where he resided till the day of his death. The result of the war, and the subsequent oppression and disgrace to which Virginia was subjected so crushed the proud spirit of the patriotic old man that he ceased to take an interest any longer in public affairs, and he retired to private life to spend his remaining days in the family of his son Robert, and died first day of May, surrounded by his children and grand children.

Col. Early was a man of high character, and was an affectionate father and husband, a kind neighbor, a respected citizen and an honest patriot. He was one of the oldest Masons in West Va., and several times was chosen to represent that body in the Grand Lodge. On his removal to Mo., his Lodge in Va., commended him in his age and infirmity to the brotherly care of all the Masons in this State; and he was accordingly conducted to the grave and buried with all the honors of a Mason, by the Lodges in Lexington, Mo. The other funeral services were performed by Rev. T.L. Smith, of the Episcopal church.
