Opal; Lida Medders Cooley, 91, loving wife, mother and grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, sister and friend of Yukon, Oklahoma received her crown in glory on September 14, 2012. Opal was born on December 11, 1920 to John Wesley and Gertrude Piatt Medders in Talihina, Oklahoma. Opal was the youngest of 11 children. She began her marriage of 47 years to A. Doyle Cooley on December 25, 1937. Opal attended Talihina Schools. In school she loved to do math, spell and run races. She was a member of Eastern Star, supporting their efforts to contribute to the education of students in theology and religious music . Opal was employed by the State Hospital in Talihina. In 1958 she went to work at the Eastern Oklahoma State A & M College Student Union in Wilburton, Oklahoma. her dedication, work ethic and love of people propelled her to become Director of the Student Union Food Service Department. She arose faithfully at 4 AM each morning to work with her employees to feed the numerous college students and continued her service until retirement in 1983. Opal and her husband, Doyle resided in Wilburton until 1983, when they moved to Yukon, Oklahoma. In Yukon, Opal was an active member of Bethel Baptist Church and attended singings each Tuesday evening at the Mustang Senior Center. Opal never met a stranger and was loved by everyone who came in contact with her. She thrived on the moments her family gathered at her home for holidays or special occasions. She took particular care to ensure that everyone had their favorite food to eat. Homemade rolls, pies, cakes and cobblers were always a treat. Opal was an expert cook and seamstress making beautiful quilts, blankets and outfits for those she loved Opal also loved gardening canning and making jelly. She loved watching football and basketball. Her favorite activity was listening to her husband, his siblings her children and grandchildren sing gospel music. Opal is survived by her children-daughter Pat and husband Don Watson of Choctaw, son, Wayland and wife, Dixie Cooley of Yukon, daughter, Gale and husband, Richard Edwards of Long Beach, California, and daughter, Carolyn and husband, Ron Armes of Oklahoma City. Eleven grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren and a host of brother and sisters-in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Opal; was preceded in death by her husband, Doyle, her parents, 10 siblings and one grandson. The family would like to thank the staff of Victorian Estates in Yukon and Crossroads Hospice for their love, devotion, care and compassion to Opal and her family, during her time at Victorian Estates and her short illness. Services will be held Sunday, September 16, 2012, 2 p.m. at the Talihina Assembly of God with Chester Cooley officiating. Interment will follow at Laura-McGee Cemetery under the direction of Talihina Funeral Home.
