James Pring Black was born on February 10, 1815, in Washington County, Tennessee. He is the son of James Black and Rachel Spring Black, his full siblings are Adam, John S, Sarah, Soloman, John, and Thomas, his half-siblings from his fathers first marriage to Jennie Law Black are Mary, Thomas and a brother and sister that died at birth. He married Mary Howard Dykes on September 26, 1837. Their children are Jesse, Nancy, Russell, Mary Jane, John W., Solomon, Rachel Elizabeth, Sarah Emily, James Jackson, Margaret Levina, Martha Frances Black. He died on December 8, 1863, in LaGrange, Troup County, Georgia, at the age of 48.
