Joe was the eldest son born to Irish immigrants, Joseph and Mary O'Kane Peake. Due to his father's later disability, he and his sisters took on many of the family's financial responsibilities. He attended Hartison HS and proudly served in the US Marine Corps as a Corporal during WWII. He operated anti-aircraft artillery in the Pacific Theater, was stationed in the Hawaiian Islands and on Palau with the occupational forces. After the war, he married Katheryn E. Hansen on January 20, 1946, and lived in Lyndhurst, NJ most of his married life.

He died of complications from cardiac surgery. Funeral Rites were conducted at Sacred Heart RC Church with burial following in Hillside. Joe had been proceeded in death by his parents and little sister "Chickie", and was survived by his wife, daughter, his brother and four sisters. He was kind, loving, and dependable as a friend and brother, truthful and honest in his dealings with all, a dedicated husband and father, and an enjoyable uncle that loved everyone and was respected by all who knew him.
