AGED PIONEEER DIED FRIDAY

RACHEL POTTORFF, WHO LIVED HERE FOR FORTY YERS DIED AT HOME OF DAUGHTER IN COFFEYVILLE

Deceased Was Past 91 Years Of Age and Had Always Lead An Active Life

It becomes our duty this week to chronicle the death of another aged pioneer, Mrs. Rachel Pottorff, who had passed the allowed age of man by more than a score of years. Coming from Missouri to Kansas, she had resided in and near Edna nearly forty years and the last decade was spent in Coffeyville. Her first home in Edna, was in the postoffice building and after the commission of her late husband as postmaster had expired, they built, and for many years occupied the home now owned by Lloyd Lozier. Mrs. Pottorff, after the death of her husband, continued to make her home in Edna for fifteen years. No one was more universally liked than this good Christian mother. A fine characteristic, that was noticeable, was the quiet contented life that she lived, always the same when you visited her home, always kind and considerate and she was blind to the faults of others. She passed away as she had lived these many long yers, at peace with all mankind.

Mrs. Rachel Bright was born at Terre Haute, Ind. on Jan. 10, 1839 and passed from this life March 21, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. May Hancock, Coffeyville, Kansas. She was aged 91 years, 2 months and 11 days.

While yet a resident of Indiana she was united in marriage to William H. Pottorff and to this union two sons and one daughters were born. The sons, Frank Pottorff and J.E. Pottorff passed away several years ago.

Surviving besides the daughter, Mrs. Hancock are five grand daughters, Mrs. R. R. May, Mrs. Floyd Myres, Mrs. Esther Wright, Mrs. Ed Parks, and Mrs. Harry Parks, both of McCarney, Tex., two grand sons, Lester Hancock of Coffeyville and Oscar Pottorff of Edna, Kansas.

The family moved to Edna in 1891 when the late William H. Pottorff was appointed post master under Grover Cleveland's second administration. After the death of her husband the widow continued to reside here until the year 1919 when she went to Coffeyville to make her home with her daughter, Mrs. May Hancock. She was a member of the Presbyterian church of Edna until the organization disbanded and then she attended the M.E. church.

The funeral took place from the Edna Methodist Episcopal church Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock, Rev. William I. Hastie, pastor of the First M.E. church of Coffeyville preaching the funeral discourse. The selections were also rendered by a select choir from Coffeyville. Interment in the family lot in the north Edna cemetery.
