Eldest of three children of Peter and Margaretha Klingenschmidt Zahn, he married Lillie E. Miller on 26 May 1892 in Lake Co. Illinois.

John's family moved to Deerfield after the Great Chicago Fire in 1871. There he apprenticed as a blacksmith in his father's business until age 16 when he returned to Chicago to attend business college.

In September, 1890 he moved to Denver, CO where he worked first for a furniture company, then a lumber firm and then became a member of the firm of Pierce & Zahn, booksellers. In 1908 he became manager of Portland Cement Co. and later was treasurer until it was sold to Ideal Cement Co. He and his wife retired to California and celebrated their 50th Anniversary there in May, 1942.

One of the organizers of the Denver chapter of the American Red Cross, in 1915 he was the first district governor of Rotary Clubs for Colorado and Wyoming and served three terms as a director. He was president of the local Rotary club in 1928-9.

He was a member of the Colorado Consistory No. 1, and Knight Commander in the Court of Honor. He was also a member of Highlands Lodge 86, A. F. and A. M.
