Born in Morschheim, 3rd of 6 of Karl Dietrich Zahn and Anne Margarethe Angst (1807-1859), Peter arrived in New York on S.S. New York on 24 Jun 1869 and joined cousin Johannes Knecht & older brother Jacob Zahn in creating a successful blacksmith and wagon building business in Deerfield.
He married Margaret Klingenschmidt about Oct. 1869 in Chicago. The family moved to Deerfield in 1871 after the Great Fire. They were active members of Diversey Parkway Evangelical church in Chicago from its beginning.
