Fourth Engineer Officer Michael Cairns of the Royal Merchant Navy served on the British merchant vessel San Delfino, which was destroyed by a torpedo fron German U-Boat U-203 in May 1942 off the shores of the North Carolina, Outer Banks village of Buxton, and washed ashore
nearly a month after the attack. The cemetery is maintained by the Hatteras Island Historical Society, The Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum and the United States Coast Guard. The National Park Service is responsible for the integrity of the site.
