Lyle Eldon Wood passed away in his sleep the morning of Sept. 7, 2012. He'd had loving care from his caretaker, Cathi Darrow; son, Jerry, and hospice nurses for many months. He was nearing his 94th birthday this month with anticipation of a lovely dinner in his honor as was family custom. Lyle never complained about health issues and appreciated everyone's kindness, attention, and help. Lyle was predeceased last year by his loving wife of nearly 69 years, Doris Mae Ford-Wood and missed her every day. They were both born and raised in Rippey, Iowa. Lyle entered the Navy, and came home on leave after a couple of years. Doris was all grown up now and they fell in love and married. Being a Navy couple, they began their adventures, one of which was being featured in Look Magazine as newlyweds. As they moved from base to base and country to country, their family expanded with the birth of two sons. Lyle was away on secretive missions, including being a Cryptologist Tech Chief, working during WWII in Europe, Korea, and Japanese theaters. In China he was part of the "Rice-Paddy Navy" with "SACO" - "Sino-American Chinese Association". Lyle was a long time member of the U.S.S. Lexington CV-2 Club as the Public Relations Officer. After retirement from the Navy, they moved to Chico and he started Lyle E. Wood Pest Control, passed it on to son, Dennis who ran it until recently. This well-liked couple enjoyed participating in Elks activities, golf, cards, RV travel and more. He is survived by son, Dennis and his wife, Pat; as well as son, Jerry and his wife, Dani, all of Chico, CA. Lyle had bragging rights to 6 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren, most of whom live nearby.
