Fultonians' Car Plunges Into The Illinois River

Dale Chiles, 18, Drowned; Merle Leach, 18, Drowned; and Marvin Justus Survives.

A car carrying two young Fultonians and a former Fulton youth home for the weekend crashed into the steel retaining gate at the New Florence bridge on U.S. 36, about 15 miles east of Pittsfield, IL, last night and plunged into the Illinois River. The gate had been raised to allow a barge to pass the bridge.

The Associated Press reported this morning that the driver of the car was Roger D. Chiles, 18, of Fulton, MO who drowned. One passenger in the car, Merle Leach (memorial #49546985), 18, of McLean, IL also drowned. The surviving passenger was Marvin Justus, 18, formerly of Fulton, MO was able to get through a car window and swim to the surface. He was taken to an Illinois hospital in fair condition. Justus, who attended Fulton High School last year, is a son of Mr. & Mrs. Tom Justus, formerly of Brock's Trailer Court, south of Fulton, and now of Huntsville, MO.

Funeral services for Roger Dale Chiles, 18, who drowned Friday night as a result of a traffic accident in Illinois, was held this afternoon at the Browning Funeral Home, Fulton, MO. The Reverend Harold Garrett officiated and burial was in Callaway Memorial Gardens. He was born on September 15, 1947, in Fulton, son of Mr. and Mrs. Alonzo Chiles of Fulton. He was a 1965 graduate of Fulton High School and had been in training with Continental Life Insurance Co. of Chicago. Youth Chiles also had been active in 4-H Club work in Callaway County and had served as president of the Fairview Builders Club for three or four years.

Surviving young Chiles, in addition to his parents, are three brothers, Billy Leon Chiles, Robert Lee Chiles and Kenneth Wayne Chiles, and two nieces and one nephew.
