When James Madison Benefield was born in February 1837 in Scott, Missouri, his father, Henderson, was 27 and his mother, Sarah Louisa Tackett, was 26. He married Catherine E. {Kate} Talkington on March 6, 1865, in Lamar, Texas. They had one child during their marriage. He died on May 21, 1902, in Texarkana, Texas, at the age of 65, and was buried there.
James served in the Civil War Company B, 2nd MOUNTED RIFLES ARKANSAS, became a Captain. After the war he and his brother Benjamin Jefferson Benefield came to Clarksville, Red River County, Texas. He, B J, & Dr E S Look had a grocery store there. James & B J moved to Jefferson, Marion, Texas about 1868 & opened a grocery along with Dr. E S Look.
James moved to Texarkana about 1872. B J, his brother continued to operated the grocery & dray business independently.
James Madison Benefield, owned and operated the Benefield Hotel in Texarkana, Texas at 300 West Broad Street beginning in 1872 until his death in 1902. In May 1876 he ran for Mayor of Texarkana. In 1901 he was the Texarkana Texas City Secretary and was on the School Board & served as secretary.
He was the founding elder of the Pine Street Presbyterian Church with Rev. Charles Goldberg in 1888.

Major J. M. Benefield, of Texarkana, was born in Scott county, Mo., February 1, 1837. A few months later his parents removed to Arkansas, where he was reared and educated. He went into the military service in 1861 in command of Company B, Second regiment Arkansas rifles, with which he fought at Wilson's Creek, Chustenahlah, Elkhorn Tavern, at Farmington during the siege of Corinth, Richmond, Ky., Murfreesboro, Jackson, Miss., Chickamauga, the battle of the Atlanta campaign, and Franklin, Tenn. At the battle of Elkhorn Tavern he was wounded and captured. After the close of hostilities he resided in Texas and became one of the original settlers of Texarkana, where he was well known for many years, until his retirement from business, as the founder and manager of the Benefield hotel.'
