Abe was still living at home when the Civil War broke out. His brothers Benjamin and Joe enlisted, so Abe ran away and rode horseback to the Indian Territory where he enlisted even though he was only 16 years old. When his age was discovered, he was sent back home, where he stayed until he was 18. He enlisted in 1863 and served in Co D of the 28th Texas Dismounted Cavalry in 1863 under Baxter. At the end of the conflict he was discharged at Hempstead and walked the many miles home in the company of 15-20 other soldiers. On Nov. 23, 1865 he married Mattie Kindle and they had eight children.

When Abe came to Collin County, McKinney was only two years old and he described the houses as being constructed of posts driven into the ground and logs fastened to them for walls. In later years he freighted from McKinney to Jefferson and brought back lumber for the growing town. These were long hard trips with the heavy freight wagons being pulled by oxen.
