John D Beule, born January 16, 1916, died peacefully at his home in Beaver Dam on Wednesday, August 3, 2011.

He was preceded in death by both parents, E.A. Buele and Helen Yasger Beule of Beaver Dam and Fox Lake; and is survived by his beloved wife of 69 years, Dene Hocker Beule of Montoursville, Pa.; and his two daughters. Survivors omitted per Find a Grave policy.

John married Dene Hocker in Williamsport, Pa., in July 1942 after receiving a bachelor of science degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and his master's of science from Penn State University. Because of his deep interest in wildlife management, he was the first undergraduate student admitted to Aldo Leopold's graduate-level classes at UW-Madison in 1936.

John served in the U.S. Armed Forces from 1942 to 1946, first as an Army MP overseeing German prisoners of war in the U.S., and later as a weatherman in the Army Air Corps. In the latter capacity he spent 18 months with several other soldiers manning a small weather station 200 miles off the Arctic Circle in Greenland. Data gathered from this Arctic weather station were crucial in forecasting weather patterns for Western Europe and were used in the preparations for D-Day. During his time in Greenland he also hunted and trapped with the local Greenlanders and did research for Penn State on local animals and birds.

In 1946, he purchased The Trojan Candy Company of Beaver Dam with his brother-in-law, Steven Janczak. Later, John also co-founded Northern Trees Company, an Adams County-based grower of Christmas trees. John was a founding member of Old Hickory Country Club in 1946, and served on the Board of Directors of the Beaver Dam Chamber of Commerce, the Dodge County Historical Society, and the Beaver Dam Area Orchestra.

His love of wildlife returned John to his original profession in the 1960s, and he spent the last years of his working life as a research biologist for the Department of Natural Resources in Horizon. After John retired he began to create original waterfowl wood carvings, winning several honors at the Ward Foundation's annual competition and teaching numerous other amateur carvers in Dodge County. He will be fondly remembered.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, Aug. 8, 2011, at ST KATHARINE DREXEL, 127 W. Maple Ave., Beaver Dam, with the Rev. Father Michael Erwin officiating. A visitation will be held on Sunday, Aug. 7, 2011, from 4 p.m. - 7 p.m. at the KOEPSELL FUNERAL HOME in Beaver Dam and also on Monday from 10 a.m. until the time of Mass at 11 a.m. at ST. KATHARINE DREXEL, 127 W. Maple Ave., Beaver Dam.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to either the Beaver Dam Area Orchestra, Beaver Dam Community Health Foundation or the St. Katharine Drexel Building Fund, all of Beaver Dam.
