George Stewart died in Cumberland Co., NC, in Jun 1831. He was not on his way to Salt Lake City with the Mormons. You are confusing him with his son George Stewart, Jr. and his wife Ruthinda Baker Stewart. George Sr. did not convert to Mormonism as the church wasn't established until 1830 in New York, and they didn't start sending out missionaries for a few years after that. George was already deceased and Rebecca had moved to Alabama with her sons John, George, and William, and possibly with other members of her family. Of the three sons mentioned, George and William converted and departed for the Mormon communities in Missouri and Illinois. George died in 1845 in Dallas Co., MO, and his widow Ruthinda and her family continued on until they finally reached Utah. George's brother William also made it to Utah; he died in Moab, Grand Co., UT, in 1891.
