He was the son of George Stewart, Sr., and Rebecca Utley. He and his wife Ruthinda Baker along with their two oldest children Cynthia and James were the first Mormon converts in Tuscaloosa for which they paid a great price. They were driven from their home. They attempted to reach the Mormon settlement in Missouri but George contracted a fever and died in Dallas County. His burial site is unknown. His widow Ruthinda and her family found the Mormon settlements and was able to continue with the Saints to Utah. Her son James Wesley was in the first contingent of Mormons who arrived with Brigham Young in 1847 in the valley of the Great Salt Lake. Ruthinda and the rest of her family arrived with the second group in Sep 1847.
