Bertha Virginia Gregory was born April 23, 1924, in Crosbyton, TX to Alene and Elgin E. Fowler, and died May 18, 2008 in Portales, NM.

The family moved to Muleshoe, TX when she was very young. When she was 8 years old they moved to House, NM, where they stayed for about two years. They lived briefly in Dunlap, NM before moving to Floyd, NM when she was 12 years old. On June 14, 1943 in Portales, she was married to Lewis Gregory. After their marriage they moved several times, but Mrs. Gregory lived most of her adult life in the Floyd community. Bertha was an active member of the Floyd Baptist Church for many years, helping with Vacation Bible School, teaching Sunday School, serving as church secretary or treasurer, and making sure that the church had centerpieces and decorations every month. Bertha felt that everyone should have wedding and baby showers. So, she organized and acted as a hostess on numerous occasions. She could always be counted on to help with any funeral meals or other community activities. In 1990, the Floyd Lions Club named her as Citizen of the Year at the Floyd Jamboree. Bertha was also an active member of the Portales and the Floyd Senior Citizens, as well as the Floyd Extension Club and VFW Auxiliary Post 3299. Bertha loved to go fishing and deer hunting, and for many years they took all of their grandchildren along with them. The Gregory's always grew a big garden, and then gave lots of their crop away to friends and family. Bertha also enjoyed painting and embroidery, and was always ready for a good visit. In 1989 she moved to Portales, and became a member of the Emmanuel Baptist Church.

Bertha is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Barbara and Bud Miller of Portales and Janice and Eddie Lee of Floyd; 4 grandchildren, Howard Miller, Beverly (Dion) Mast, Shannon (Tammy) Lee and Shane (Karla) Lee; 11 great-grandchildren, 9 great-great-grandchildren and another expected in July; a brother, Marvin E. Fowler of Clovis and a sister, Fayerene Peipelman of Pearland, TX.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Clayton Fowler, a sister, Goldie Carlisle, a granddaughter, Karen Elrod who died in 2004, a great-great-grandchild and by her beloved husband, Lewis, who died April 28, 2005 after more than 61 years of marriage.
