Melva Pauline Bagley Harward
1922 - 2014
Early Life: Melva was born August 27, 1922, to Edward Merrill and Ruby Arminta Bagley in the small farming community of Koosharem, Utah. Melva's older sister was blind from birth so the family spent eight winters in Ogden, where Elaine could attend the Utah School for the Blind, and then moved back to Koosharem in summers where they could run the family cattle ranch. Melva felt that she had a wonderful childhood, in part because she grew up both a country girl and a city girl. She spent the last two years of high school in Richfield, Utah, graduating in 1940.
Life's Work | Service | Interests: Melva attended Brigham Young University earning a bachelor's degree in elementary education, and after graduating, became a teacher in 1944. At the end of World War II, Melva met Vermont Clements Harward, a young soldier so recently returned from Germany, he was still wearing his uniform. Vermont and Melva were married in the Manti Utah Temple on June 27, 1949. They enjoyed 55 years together before he passed away in 2004. They lived in Aurora, Utah, and later, moved their family to Provo. Together, they raised six children. Melva's greatest life accomplishment and her joy has been raising six children, 34 grandchildren and 61 great-grandchildren who treasured their association with her. Melva was also close to her wonderful brothers and sisters. Melva enjoyed reading, cooking, learning about health and nutrition, politics and beautiful Christmas trees. She wrote children's books for her great-grandchildren about her life and the lives of their ancestors so the children would remember their heritage. Melva spent much of her life in the role of a caregiver: helping her blind sister throughout their childhood, being an attentive and loving wife, mother, grandmother, and later, in caring for her aging parents and sister. A strong member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, she took every opportunity to love and serve. Melva Pauline Bagley Harward passed away on November 2, 2014, in Payson, Utah. She was 92.
